Well – here she or he is…our last scan yesterday at 36 weeks and 6 days… and in just over a week, on May 9th, we will finally get to meet our little wriggler – so as you can imagine, there has been an awful lot to get ready and prepared for our new arrival!
There are always loads of lovely things to buy to get prepared… decorations for the nursery, curtains, cuddly toys, BEAUTIFUL outfits, bath sets, play mats…the list is endless! But for me, I just want to sort the essentials – what do I really need in the first days and weeks? Because I know the rest can be sorted later!
We have of course got many things ready, and shopping online has been a great help, not only because you can research prices and source the best deals, but you can also shop in a relaxed way and things can literally come to you!
So what have my essentials been? Well, this being our third baby we have previous experience on our side and have managed to look sensibly at the task in hand. Our list has included things for home:
- A moses basket and stand – perfect for the first few months of sleep and portable too
- Changing table and change mat – there are lots of dirty nappies on their way!
- Room thermometer – something to make sure baby will be at the right temperature
- Baby bath, towels and top and tail bowl – for bath time, and for keeping that all important bottom nice and clean!
- Travel System – I suppose I am lucky (!) in that my old one is still perfect (though I really did want a new one!). Our travel system has a car seat, carry cot, and pushchair that is easy to use – and the car seat fits into a car base too for that extra peace of mind!
And for hospital it is more about the baby and I so my hospital bag list includes…
- Nighties – an old one to start with then a nursing nighty
- Breast pads and maternity pads and old knickers – not very glam…but very needed!
- Dressing gown and slippers – I know I will be in for a few days so I want to be comfy
- Toiletries – a toothbrush and toothpaste, a flannel and a bit of make up…not to mention some hair products and a comb to stop me looking like a wild woman!
And for baby:
- Nappies and cotton wool – good newborn first size nappies are essential for those early explosions, and I always start with cotton wool and water as it’s kinder to that little bottom to start with
- Muslin Cloths – great for dealing with all sorts, but mainly milky dribbles and winding!
- Clothing – including 3-5 sleepsuits, 3-5 body suits, scratch mitts and hats. And a going home outfit too for that special occasion!
I must admit, the most exciting bit has to have been getting things ready for baby – all those lovely outfits to choose from…but as said, I wanted to sort the essentials…and thanks to this #CollectiveBias challenge I’ve come across the perfect place to get those essential, but gorgeous, basics for my little one!
The Essential one (www.theessentialone.com) is an online shop designed to offer the REAL essentials for mums and mums to be – and all the clothing is focussed on being 100% cotton.
I went on looking for some newborn essentials for my hospital bag – namely some body suits which was the only thing on my list I hadn’t yet bought – and I wasn’t disappointed!
The site itself is easy to navigate with ‘Newborn Essentials’ as one of the tabs at the top – and there is even a ‘Newborn Baby List’ tab too, giving suggestions of the things you may like to consider buying! We don’t know if we are having a little boy or a little girl, so having the ‘Newborn Essentials’ section divided into ‘Unisex Neutrals’, ‘Unisex Brights’, ‘Navy Blue’ and ‘Pink’ is really helpful as I knew where to look.
The neutrals section is perfect for me – although the colours are serene, the patterns and designs are just that little bit different giving the clothes a little bit of an edge…and being unisex they’re ideal to take to hospital in my bag. The Essential One do not have racks and racks of different styles… they have the basic, real essentials in a couple of options, and I found this quite helpful as there were not pages and pages of products to search through.
For £15.99, I thought this pack of Unisex Bodysuits was ideal and just the thing I was looking for! Made from 100% superfine cotton, they are designed to be really soft against baby’s skin. They are fully poppered, designed for ease of changing, and have a ‘soft envelope neck opening’ to help easily put onto baby’s head. A nice touch is that every pack comes with its own self fabric drawstring bag making them just essential but special!
Ordering was straight forward and simple. Once in my basket, I created an account which allowed me to use a special discount code for 10% off which was on the homepage. This also means I can save up loyalty points on each of my purchases that will give me more money off at a later date – bonus!
After filling out my shipping information (which allowed me to add a different delivery address to my billing address – a FAB idea!), I could then choose my delivery options – I could have my items the VERY NEXT DAY as long as they were ordered before 12 noon! I thought I’d give this a go as it’s a great option to have if you really need something quickly!
And there were loads of ways to pay too…not that I am sure what the checkout with Amazon is – I’ve never seen that before! I opted for Paypal, which was a quick, easy and convenient way for me to pay!
Immediately upon finalizing and confirming my order, I received a confirmation e-mail with all the details on it. I couldn’t have been more impressed!
And this continued with the constant e-mail updates letting me know that my order had been dispatched and would arrive via DPD…I even got a text letting me know the times it would arrive between that very next day! And sure enough, between 12.02pm and 1.02pm the next day, my order was delivered! IMPRESSED!
I will admit though, the only thing that did let it down for me a little was that inside the tissue paper, my beautiful and natural bodysuits were still in their plastic package, with a very basic sticker on them. I was expecting them to be presented in their lovely cotton bag which was folded inside with the bodysuits! When I’m paying that little bit more for something a little bit special, I was a little bit disappointed with that interior presentation – especially as everything had been so fantastic up until that point!
Once I had ‘released’ them from the plastic though, I could feel the softness of the cotton and the could appreciate the quality of the bodysuits – and the little bag is just such a lovely touch, especially if they were to be a gift!
The neutral colours are beautiful and will be perfect for my new little one next Friday – in fact I have already chosen the spotty one as the VERY FIRST bodysuit my little one will wear. The cotton is so soft to touch and I know it will be perfect for my new baby’s delicate skin, and I just love the simple, natural design but with the gorgeously innocent patterns! Perfect!
I couldn’t be more impressed with The Essential One and I’m so glad I came across their online shop! It is nice to know that there is somewhere offering something just that little bit different and exclusive, with reasonable prices, great values, using great materials…and with options that mean you can confidently have your shopping quickly and safely!
I think me and my new arrival will definitely be back…once we know if it’s a pink or blue one x x
