The Family Meal Planner Box from Simon Howie The Scottish Butcher provides you with enough meat to feed a family of 4 for a week – so that is 28 portions for £53!
On day 1 we chose to cook the Chicken Kievs as it was a busy day with little time to cook. Day 2 was a slightly different story, so I could get a little more creative with my meat!
I chose to use the 500g pack of Extra Lean Steak Mince to create a Bolognase Bake – a family meal ideal to prepare in advance then heat up to serve when it was needed!
So how do you make Bolognase Bake? Well here is my recipe:
Bolognase Bake is a great was to get a few of your 5-a-day into a meal, and also a brilliant way to use up bits and bobs that are left in the fridge. In my recipe I used 2 carrots, an onion, 1 1/2 courgettes and some celery – but whatever you have in the fridge to throw in usually works well!
Start by chopping an onion and then add the onion and pack of Simon Howie Steak Mince to a pan. I use a heavy based pan so the meat doesn’t stick, and tend not to use any oil! I was really pleased that the Steak Mince was extra lean as being on the Slimming World plan, you can eat Extra Lean Mince freely! So for me this meant I was going to be able to eat as much of my bake as I liked! YAY!
Brown the mince and onion, using the spatula to break up any big clumps. It was really obvious from the outset that the Steak Mince was good quality meat – there was very little fat and the Mince had a dense meaty texture and appearance. It browned well too!
Then my secret is to add a good few handfuls of frozen peppers – they add great flavour to a bolognase sauce and are so handy to have in the freezer. They are great value too, making a meal go further!
Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, 1/2 tin of water (a good way to rinse your tin too!), a beef stock cube, a good squeeze of both tomato and garlic puree and a teaspoon of dried basil, then season well with salt and pepper.
Allow this to simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce becomes thicker and richer. Whilst this is simmering cook your chosen pasta in a large pan of boiling water and grate some cheese.
When the sauce is ready and the pasta is cooked, drain the pasta and add it to the sauce…
…then transfer it to an oven dish and top with the cheese. This can then be left until you are ready to eat… and just popped in the oven to bake later!
For us this meant swimming lesson and Cub time… and the pasta bake was ready to pop in the oven on our return. 30 minutes in the oven at 180oc when we got home….
and our Bolognase Bake was ready! This amount made 4 servings for tea… and there was a serving left to go to work with Daddy the next day!
And the verdict???
And what does Mummy think? Well, I am REALLY impressed once again with the quality of the meat – the Steak Mince was not fatty and REALLY meaty, perfect for Slimming World too! And the 500g pack made 5 servings – more than enough for a family meal!
So, 2 days in and 9 portions down in the Simon Howie Family Meal Planner Box Challenge and all is going well! What is next in our challenge???
Keep an eye out for my next post!
